Happiness rises from the heart. It is something we feel inside. We can either choose to live with an intention to be happy or rush into things and busyness of life without even stopping to look and check-in our emotional health. Acknowledge the goodness in our lives to be present and aware.
What is Happiness Really
Happiness comes from within. Decades of research suggests happiness as having satisfaction and meaning in your life. People who say they are happy have the ability to maintain meaningful relationships, to have a community, and to connect with others. We are present when we are connected.
Happiness is not elusive when we really spend time to think about what we really want for our life. There is contentment and satisfaction when life is lived with purpose and meaning. Our happiness differs from others but what we have in common is we create our happiness. Things that cause happiness are free that you have control over and you can do it anywhere.
Smiling – Release the Endorphins!
We can’t help but interact when we someone smiles at us. According to science, our brain releases tiny molecules called neuropeptides to help fight off stress. Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins. When we are stress-free, we feel better.
Smiling, even forced, can elevate you mood and improves the function of your immune system because you are more relaxed. People are naturally attracted to people who smile. When you’re smiling, people may even assume you have more positive personality traits that makes them hang out with you.
Random Acts of Kindness.
What is happiness really comes from the simplest way we can do for others. Deliberately performing a random act of kindness daily makes you feel happier and brighten or makes a person’s day. You feel good when you make the other person feel and it activates your brain’s rewards system.
You can lift other’s up in your own home or neighborhood. Small acts of kindness and compassion can make a big difference to you well-being and social connection.
- If you’re in line at the grocery store and have some extra time, let someone else go in front of you.
- Call a loved one for no particular reason —just to say hi.
- Make your spouse a coffee before work.
- Give a friendly nod at a stranger you see while on a walk or doing errands.
- Thank your child’s teacher for their advise and support.
- Make someone laugh.
Gratitude is one of the powerful things that cause happiness from our core being. We tend neglect to express gratitude for the free resources we have – the clear air, fresh water, cool wind, the beautiful night sky and bright stars, nature in our environment and many more. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions. You feel happier when you are being grateful for the things you have like your family, great friends, the cool things you own, your work, your lovable dog, your furnished home and the help you have had along the way.
Research suggests that gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Grateful people are happy and joyful. They are grateful for what they value at the present moment. Happiness is in the present moment. The key to being grateful is awareness. We see opportunity in awareness instead of lack and scarcity. Our mind shifts its focus to positivity by practicing gratefulness.
Enrich Your Social Connection.
Remaining socially connected combats loneliness and isolation. Humans are naturally social creatures and we require social connections to thrive. Good and supportive relationships enrich flow and our happiness in our daily life.
Social wellness is taking care of yourself while caring for others. It is a give-and-take connection that are both healthy and supportive to you and the other person. You can increase your social connection with naturally simple ways.
- Get outside of your house and engage in a friendly conversation with your neighbor. Get to know your neighbor.
- Send a friendly appreciation note to your colleague
- Join a group that focus on your interest and you’ll make an acquaintance or possible a new friend
Practice Being Present.
Practicing being present makes you connected to your present life and in turn create a happier life. Being present can open new doors for your future by looking at the present that made you become to the person you are right now. When you are paying attention to the things in your present life, you have freed yourself from your past. Research suggests that people who live in the now are happier, more optimistic, connected to life and more satisfied with life overall.
Your body and mind are connected. Taking care of your body helps take care of your mind. Being physically active and nourishing your body with proper nutrition will make you happier overtime. A little exercise will go a long way to reducing stress. What you do to your body can impact your mental state (the food you eat, how much you exercise and even your posture).
Schedule a time for yourself, and your mind and body will thank you. You will save yourself with energy to do the things that matter to your happiness when your body and mind are in healthy state. Make sure your body gets enough sleep and rest it needs to recharge.
Self-care is a form of self-compassion. Cultivate a warm, supportive inner voice and avoid criticizing yourself. Remember, you cannot give what you don’t have. If you are not happy, you cannot give happiness to the other person.
Happiness is A Choice You Can Make.
What is happiness really comes down to a choice. Every day you can choose to be happy or go the other way. Nobody can have control over your emotions but you. You can choose the things that are aligned to your goal of living a happy life daily.
The benefits of happiness are long-lasting and the things that cause happiness really are something you can do from anywhere. Make it a priority to protect your happiness, so let go of the things that don’t fit.
